(22 Jun 2016) BEAUTY TRENDS ACCORDING TO SKIN EXPERTS
“Some of the beauty trends that we are seeing right now really parallel pop culture and fashion.”
That’s according to Celebrity Dermatologist Dr. Haleh Bakshandeh.
The skin expert, who runs a practice in Beverley Hills, says stars like Kim Kardashian have been influencing the clients she sees coming through her doors.
“The fuller figure that Kim Kardashian is so famous for making popular we also have this fuller face. The fuller eyebrows, the fuller cheek, the fuller lips. I think that’s something that we really didn’t see 10 years ago. It was more about a subtle more natural look where as now you are really seeing this amped up volume, lots of makeup, the fake lashes – it’s that look that we’re seeing that is so popular and that really plays into a lot of cosmetology dermatology procedures.”
Using fillers, like Dysport and Botox, to plump the skin, can actually stimulates natural collagen, says Bakshandeh.
“So if you put filler in your lip consecutively, a few times in a row you will have a long lasting effect. That could be good news but it can also be bad news because if you don’t want it anymore it’s very difficult to erase that collagen that’s been built by the stimulation of that filler.”
While Bakshandeh advocates the use of such procedures she does warn that having an “overdone look really does age you.”
Danish skin cosmetician and skin care products manufacturer Ole Henriksen notes that too much use of fillers can cause the face to becoming “mummified.”
“It loses life. A face should have life and it should have mime and you don’t need subtitles when you have certain actresses on the big screen to tell them what emotions they’re going through,” he says. “So I think in moderation if you are an elderly person and you have deeply carved lines alpha-hydroxy acid will certainly help to soften them but if you need a little extra help then it may be appropriate. But when you are very young you are actually aging yourself way ahead of time.”
Instead, Hernriksen, whose skin care line is used by celebrities such as Katy Perry, Shakira, Jessica Chastain, Amy Adams and Mark Wahlberg, recommends the use of less aggressive products to achieve this season’s look.
“The most popular beauty trend for 2016 is undoubtedly dewy, healthy looking skin and it’s really something that every woman can attain especially if she uses the right moisturizer faithfully every day. One that is rich in texture, one that is created with essential fatty acids like sesame, avocado, algae extract to firm and tighten the skin, lots of vitamin C to brighten the skin, to give you that beautiful luminous glow.”
